Key Facts
Two Countries Become One Big Country!
Once upon a time, there were two separate kingdoms: England and Scotland. They were like two best friends who decided to live in the same house! In 1707, they made a super important agreement called the Acts of Union.
This agreement joined England and Scotland together to become one country called Great Britain. Queen Anne was the boss, or sovereign, of this new big country. It was like merging two favorite toys into one even cooler toy!
How Did This Happen?
For a long time, England and Scotland had the same king or queen, but they were still separate countries. It was like having the same teacher for two different classes. They tried to join up before, but it didn't quite work out.
Finally, in 1707, leaders from both England and Scotland met and agreed to officially become one. They signed a special treaty, and then their parliaments, like the big meeting rooms for important decisions, passed laws to make it official.
Why It Was a Big Deal!
Becoming Great Britain was a really big deal! It meant that England and Scotland would share everything, like their laws and their money. It was like sharing your lunchbox with your best friend every day.
This union helped them become stronger together. It also meant they had one parliament, where all the important decisions for the whole country of Great Britain would be made. This new country would have a much bigger voice in the world!
A New Kingdom is Born!
When the Acts of Union took effect on May 1, 1707, the Kingdom of Great Britain was officially created. Their new parliament met in a special place called the Palace of Westminster. Imagine if your school and your friend's school decided to have all their classes in one giant new building!
This was a huge change that shaped the country we know today. It was the start of a new chapter for both England and Scotland.
