ANT posits a symmetrical approach, placing humans and non-humans on the same analytical plane. Instead, ANT views everything – from a scientist's pen to a political movement – as potential 'actors' capable of influencing outcomes by enrolling and aligning other actors within their network.

Emerging from the vibrant field of Science and Technology Studies (STS) in the 1980s, ANT was pioneered by scholars like Michel Callon, Bruno Latour, and John Law. By granting agency to non-humans, ANT forces a re-evaluation of what constitutes 'social' action. It moves beyond a purely human-centric view to embrace a more comprehensive understanding of how heterogeneous elements – both animate and inanimate, conceptual and material – combine to produce specific outcomes. ANT advocates for a strictly empirical and descriptive methodology. Rather than imposing pre-existing theoretical categories or seeking grand explanations, ANT researchers meticulously trace the associations and translations that occur within a network. The goal is to 'follow the actors' and describe how they define their relationships, mobilize resources, and achieve their objectives.
Explanations, if offered, emerge from this detailed description, rather than preceding it. This approach avoids reifying abstract concepts like 'social forces' or 'power,' instead focusing on the concrete actions and interactions that constitute them. The theory functions less as a rigid doctrine and more as a sensitizing device, encouraging researchers to be attentive to the often-unseen assumptions and connections that underpin social phenomena.

In today's hyper-connected world, ANT's insights are more relevant than ever. The rise of the internet, artificial intelligence, and globalized systems highlights the intricate interplay between human intentions and technological affordances. ANT provides a valuable lens for analyzing phenomena such as the spread of misinformation, the design of smart cities, the impact of algorithms on social behavior, and the challenges of environmental governance.
By emphasizing the distributed nature of agency and the importance of heterogeneous networks, ANT offers a framework for understanding and intervening in complex socio-technical systems.
