A Big Sea Fight Far Away!

Once upon a time, long, long ago, there was a huge sea battle! It happened in August 1702, far across the ocean near a place called Colombia. Two groups of ships were fighting: one from England, led by a brave captain named Admiral Benbow, and another from France. Admiral Benbow really wanted to win and chased the French ships with all his might!

Admiral Benbow's Brave Try

Admiral Benbow was super brave! He told his ships to attack the French ships. But, oh no! Most of the other English captains didn't listen or help him. They just sailed away. This meant the French ships could get away, even though Admiral Benbow tried his very best. It was a bit like playing a game and only one person trying to score!

A Sad Ending and a Hero's Song

During the fight, Admiral Benbow got hurt and lost a leg! He was very brave even then. Sadly, he got sick later and passed away. But people remembered how brave he was! They wrote songs about him called 'Admiral Benbow' or 'Brave Benbow'. Sailors loved singing these songs for over 100 years because they told the story of his courage.

What Happened to the Other Captains?

Because some captains didn't help Admiral Benbow, they were in big trouble. They were accused of being scared and not doing their job. Two of them were so serious that they were punished by being shot. This shows how important it was for everyone to work together and be brave during a battle.
