Key Facts
When Movies Started Talking!
Long, long ago, movies didn't have any talking! They were silent, like a mime show. So, there wasn't a special award for movies made in other countries.
But then, movies learned to talk, and people wanted to celebrate the best movies made in languages other than English. This is how the award for Best International Feature Film was born, to shine a spotlight on incredible stories from all over the globe!
The Award's Big Journey
At first, the Academy gave special prizes to foreign films, but it wasn't a real competition with nominees. It was like getting a surprise sticker! Then, in 1956, they decided to make it a real award, with lots of movies nominated and one big winner.
This award is given to movies made outside the United States that are mostly in a language that isn't English. It's a way to say 'Hooray!' to filmmakers everywhere.
Who Gets the Shiny Gold Man?
The Oscar statue, a shiny gold man, is officially given to the director of the winning film. But it's really a team award! It celebrates everyone who worked on the movie in the country that made it. Imagine a whole school working together on a big project and everyone getting a special mention! Since 2014, the names of the filmmakers are even engraved on the Oscar itself.
Europe's Movie Magic!
Guess what? Most of the movies that have won this award come from Europe! It's like if most of the winners at a school talent show were from one continent. Out of all the awards given out, a big number have gone to European films. This shows how many amazing stories have come from countries like Italy and France over the years.
