A Mountain of Trouble!

High on a mountain above a little village called Aberfan, people piled up leftover coal bits. This pile, called a spoil tip, got bigger and bigger. It was like building a huge, messy sandcastle, but with coal! This pile was supposed to be safe, but it had a secret problem: water was hiding inside it, like a hidden puddle in your sandbox.

When the Mountain Moved!

One rainy day, the water inside the coal pile got too much. It was like a balloon filled with too much water, ready to pop! Suddenly, the whole giant pile slid down the mountain like a muddy, gooey river. It was so fast and so big, it was taller than a playground slide and wider than a street!

A Sad Surprise

The muddy coal river rushed right into the village. It hit a school where children were just starting their lessons. It was a terrible surprise, and sadly, many children and grown-ups were hurt. It was like a giant, unexpected wave of mud crashing down without any warning.

Remembering Aberfan

After this sad event, people wanted to make sure it never happened again. They learned that the coal pile wasn't built safely. Everyone worked together to clean up and build a special garden to remember the children and adults who were lost. It's important to remember what happened so we can be safe.
