Iowa's Big Day!

Imagine a giant playground where everyone gets to choose a leader for the whole country! That's kind of what happened in Iowa on November 5, 2024. People there, just like in other states, voted to help pick the next President of the United States. Iowa gets to send 6 special helpers, called electors, to a big meeting called the Electoral College to cast their votes. It's a very important job!

Red State, Blue State, What Does It Mean?

Sometimes, people call states 'red' or 'blue' depending on who they usually vote for. Iowa is often called a 'red' state because more people there tend to vote for the Republican candidate. But guess what?

Sometimes things get surprising! A little while before the election, one poll showed the other candidate, from the Democratic party, was even a little bit ahead! It made people wonder if the race would be super close.

The Winner Takes It All!

Even though the race got a little exciting with that poll, the Democratic party didn't try too hard to win in Iowa this time. In the end, the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, won in Iowa by a LOT! He won by more than 13 out of every 100 votes. That's the biggest win for a Republican in Iowa in a super long time, since way back in 1972! It was a really big win for him.

Who's Counting the Votes?

Have you ever wondered who helps figure out who wins? There are special people called pollsters who ask lots of people who they plan to vote for before the election. One very famous pollster in Iowa, named Selzer, was so good at his job that he was known all over the state. After this election, he decided it was time to retire and take a break. It was the end of an era for Iowa elections!
