Key Facts
Why Did the Fighting Start?
Sometimes, countries have big disagreements. In 2006, a group called Hezbollah and the country of Israel had a serious argument. Hezbollah wanted to free some Lebanese people who were in Israeli prisons.
To get Israel's attention, Hezbollah soldiers ambushed some Israeli soldiers near the border. This started a big conflict that lasted for 34 days. It was like a really long, intense game of tag that got out of hand.
What Happened During the War?
The fighting was serious. Israel sent airplanes to drop bombs and used big cannons to shoot at places in Lebanon. They even hit the main airport in Beirut!
Then, Israeli soldiers went into southern Lebanon. Hezbollah soldiers fought back, hiding and shooting rockets into northern Israel. They launched almost 4,000 rockets!
It was a tough time for everyone living there, with lots of noise and worry.
How Did It End?
After many weeks of fighting, the United Nations, which is like a big club of countries trying to keep peace, stepped in. They helped make a plan for everyone to stop fighting. This plan meant Hezbollah had to put away their weapons, and Israeli soldiers had to leave Lebanon.
The United Nations also sent more peacekeepers to help keep things calm. Finally, a ceasefire, which is like a pause button for fighting, was agreed upon.
What Changed After the Fighting?
Even though the fighting stopped, things were different. Many homes and buildings in Lebanon were damaged, and lots of people had to leave their homes to find safer places. Some people in Israel also had to leave their homes because of the rockets.
The war showed how important it is for countries to find peaceful ways to solve problems. The two captured soldiers were eventually returned to Israel much later.
