Key Facts
The Big Secret Meeting!
Once in a while, when the Pope, who is like the head leader of the Catholic Church, can no longer do his job because he has passed away, a very special meeting happens. This meeting is called a conclave. It's like a super-secret club meeting where special people called cardinals get together to choose the next Pope.
In 2005, after Pope John Paul II died, the cardinals had to have one of these important conclaves.
Who Gets to Vote?
Only certain cardinals, called cardinal electors, get to go to the conclave. Think of them like the most experienced players on a team. In 2005, there were 117 of these special cardinals ready to make a big decision. Almost all of them showed up, which means it was a very important time for everyone involved. They all gathered in a special place to make their choice.
Picking the New Pope!
The cardinals vote, and they have to vote until one person gets enough votes to be the new Pope. It took them four tries, like playing a game four times, to pick the winner! The person they chose was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. He was already a very important person in the church, like a principal at a big school. After he was chosen, he took a new name: Benedict XVI.
A Special Kind of Leader
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was special because he was the first person to become Pope from a part of the church called the Roman Curia in a very long time. This is like picking a new captain from the team's coaches instead of from the players on the field! This conclave was a big moment, and it showed how the church chooses its leaders through a careful and traditional process.
