Key Facts
Who Gets to Be the Boss?
In Canada, grown-ups get to vote for who they want to be in charge of the country. This is called an election! In 2004, Canadians went to the polls to pick new members for the House of Commons. It's like picking teams for a big game, but for running the whole country! The party that gets the most votes usually gets to be the boss, but sometimes it's a bit trickier, like in this election!
A Surprise Twist in the Vote!
Everyone thought the Liberal Party would win a lot of seats, like winning a giant candy bar! But then, some not-so-good news came out, and people started to change their minds. It was like a surprise plot twist in a movie!
The Liberal Party still won, but they didn't get as many seats as they hoped. They had to work with other parties to get things done, which is called a minority government. It's like sharing your toys so everyone can play!
New Teams on the Playground!
Before this election, two big teams, the Progressive Conservatives and the Canadian Alliance, decided to join forces and become one super-team called the Conservative Party of Canada! It was like two different playground groups deciding to be best friends and play together. This was the very first time this new, big team was in an election, and it made things even more exciting to watch!
When Did Everyone Vote?
The big voting day was on June 28, 2004. Imagine a whole country buzzing with excitement! To make sure everyone's votes were counted fairly, they tried to have the results announced around the same time across the country.
However, because of a special court decision, the votes in some places, like Atlantic Canada, were known before the polls closed in other places. It's like knowing the score of a game before everyone else has finished playing!
