Who Went on the Big Trip?

In 2003, a big group of soldiers from countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Poland decided to go to a country called Iraq. This trip was called Operation Iraqi Freedom. It was like a very important mission!

Many soldiers, about 160,000 in total, traveled a long way. Most of them were from America, but many friends from other countries helped too. They prepared for a long time before they left their homes.

What Was the Goal?

The leaders of these countries said they wanted to make sure Iraq didn't have dangerous weapons that could hurt people. They also wanted to stop a leader named Saddam Hussein from helping people who were bad. They hoped to help the people of Iraq be free. It was a very serious reason for such a big journey. They wanted to make the world a safer place.

A Fast Journey!

The soldiers traveled very quickly! The main part of their journey, where they were fighting, only lasted about a month. They captured the big city of Baghdad in just six days! President George W. Bush said the main fighting was over on May 1st, 2003. It was a fast trip, but it was the start of a much longer time in Iraq for many soldiers.

Did Everyone Agree?

Not everyone thought this trip was a good idea. Many people all over the world protested and didn't want the soldiers to go. Some countries that were friends with the United States also disagreed. They said there wasn't enough proof that Iraq had dangerous weapons. It shows that big decisions can make lots of people think and talk differently.
