Key Facts
Hello, Year 2000!
The year 2000 was like a brand new chapter in a giant storybook. It was the very last year of the 1900s, and it kicked off the start of a whole new thousand years! It was also the last year of the 20th century, which is like the last day of school before summer vacation. This year was extra special because it was a 'leap year', meaning it had an extra day in February, making it 366 days long!
Did Computers Get Scared?
Before the year 2000 arrived, some people worried that computers might get confused! They thought computers, which were programmed to understand years with two digits (like '99' for 1999), might not know what to do when the year changed to '00'. This was called the 'Y2K bug'. But guess what? Lots of smart people worked super hard to fix the computers, so almost nothing went wrong. Phew!
A Year for Peace and Math!
The grown-ups decided that the year 2000 should be a special year for important things. They called it the 'International Year for the Culture of Peace', which means they wanted everyone to be extra kind and friendly to each other. They also made it the 'World Mathematical Year' to celebrate how cool numbers and math can be. So, it was a year for being nice and for being smart!
When Did the New Millennium REALLY Start?
Some people thought the year 2000 was the start of the 21st century and the new 3rd millennium. But, if you count carefully, the first century started with year 1, not year 0. So, the first thousand years ended on December 31, 2000. This means the real start of the 21st century and the 3rd millennium was actually January 1, 2001! It's like a little calendar trick!
