Who Gets to Be President?

In 1980, people who wanted to be president for the Democratic Party had to win a bunch of mini-races called primaries. It was like a big game to see who was the most popular choice. The winner would then get to run for president of the whole country! These races happened all over the place, from January to June, so lots of people got to vote.

The Big Showdown!

The main person running was the president at the time, Jimmy Carter. But, a brave senator named Ted Kennedy decided to challenge him! Imagine two kids wanting the same toy; that's kind of what it was like. Senator Kennedy won 12 of these races, which is a lot! He got millions of votes, showing many people liked his ideas too.

A Record-Breaking Year!

Guess what? In 1980, there were more primary races than ever before โ€“ 37 in total! That's like having 37 different playgrounds to choose from. It was a really busy year for the Democrats. This was also the last time a president who was already in charge had their own party's nomination challenged so much before the big convention.

The Big Party!

After all the voting and racing, the Democrats had a huge party called the National Convention. This happened in August 1980 in a big city called New York. It's where they officially announced who their chosen person would be to run for president. Even though Senator Kennedy didn't win, he waited until the second day of the convention to say he wouldn't try anymore.
