Key Facts
America's Big Vote Day!
On November 2, 1976, grown-ups all over the United States got to choose who they wanted to be the next President. It was like a giant school election, but for the whole country! Two main teams, the Democrats and the Republicans, picked their best players. The Democrats chose Jimmy Carter, and the Republicans chose President Gerald Ford. Everyone was super excited to see who would win!
The Big Surprise!
Guess what? The person who was already President, Gerald Ford, didn't win! This was a HUGE surprise because it hadn't happened in a very, very long time, not since 1932! Jimmy Carter, who wasn't very famous outside his home state at first, ended up winning the whole thing. It was like a surprise underdog winning a big game!
Why Was It So Close?
President Ford had a tough job. A big problem called the Watergate scandal had made people not trust the Republican Party. Also, the country's money wasn't doing so well. Jimmy Carter said he was a regular person who wasn't part of all the big city problems. He promised to be a reformer. This made lots of people listen to him!
Who Won the Most Votes?
In the end, Jimmy Carter won more votes from the special voting system called the Electoral College. He also got a tiny bit more of the popular vote, which is the total number of votes from all the people. Carter even won in the South, which was special because it was the first time a Democrat had done that in a long time. It was a super close election!
