When the Earth Roared!

One night in 1976, the ground in China decided to have a HUGE shake! It was an earthquake so strong, it was like the Earth was doing a giant rumble. This happened in a city called Tangshan. In just a few moments, most of the buildings there tumbled down, like blocks from a toy tower. Roads and bridges also broke apart. It was a very, very sad day for the people who lived there.

How Big Was the Shake?

This earthquake was super powerful! It was like having 7.6 giant bowling balls rolling down a hill at once. The shaking was so strong that 85 out of every 100 buildings in Tangshan couldn't stand up anymore.

They either fell over or became too wobbly to use. All the lights went out, and the phones stopped working. It was like the whole city suddenly went dark and quiet, except for the sound of the shaking.

So Many People Hurt

Sadly, this earthquake was one of the worst in history because so many people lost their homes and, even more sadly, their lives. The official count said over 240,000 people died, which is more than the number of kids in thousands of schools! Some people think even more people were lost. It's hard to imagine so many people being affected by one event. It shows how powerful nature can be.

Remembering and Rebuilding

After the big shake, people had to help each other. They worked together to find survivors and start rebuilding their homes and the city. It took a very long time, but the people of Tangshan were very brave. They learned how to build stronger buildings so that if the Earth ever rumbles again, they will be safer. This event reminds us to always be prepared for nature's surprises.
