Key Facts
Where the Race Cars Roared!
Imagine a special racetrack called Pukekohe Park Raceway in New Zealand. That's where the big 1972 New Zealand Grand Prix happened! New Zealand is a beautiful country with green hills and amazing beaches, far away across the ocean. The weather was probably sunny and warm, perfect for a fast race. This race was like a super-duper important party for race cars!
A Race Through Time!
This wasn't just any race; it was the 18th time they had held the New Zealand Grand Prix! Think of it like celebrating your 18th birthday โ a really big deal! It was also the very first race of a whole series called the Tasman Series. So, all the drivers were super excited to start this big adventure and win lots of points.
Meet the Speedy Winners!
The fastest driver was an Australian named Frank Gardner. He zoomed around the track in a super-fast McLaren race car. Coming in second was a British champion who usually races motorcycles, Mike Hailwood! And guess what? The first New Zealander to finish the race was Robbie Francevic, also in a cool McLaren car. He came in 9th place, which is still pretty awesome!
A Sad Moment on the Track
Sadly, during the race, there was an accident. Two drivers, Bryan Faloon and Graeme Lawrence, had a crash on a straight part of the track. It was a very sad moment for everyone watching. Even though racing is exciting, safety is super important for all the drivers.
