Key Facts
Where Did the Big Race Happen?
This super important election happened all across the United States of America! Think of it like a giant playground where people in every state got to choose who would be in charge. The United States is a huge country with lots of different places, from tall mountains to big cities and sunny beaches.
People from all these different places, with different weather and different things to see, were all thinking about who they wanted to be president.
What Made This Election So Wild?
The year 1968 was a really busy and sometimes sad year in America. Big, important leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were sadly lost.
There were also lots of people who disagreed about a war happening far away called the Vietnam War. Imagine if everyone in your class had a really strong opinion about something, and they all wanted to talk about it at the same time! It made things feel very noisy and exciting, like a big game with lots of cheering and shouting.
Who Were the Main Runners?
There were a few main people running to be president. One was named Richard Nixon, who had been vice president before. Another was Hubert Humphrey, who was the vice president at the time.
There was also a third person, George Wallace, who wanted to do things a little differently. It was like a three-legged race, but instead of running, they were trying to convince everyone to vote for them. Each one had different ideas about how to lead the country.
Picking a Winner!
After everyone voted, it was a very close race! Richard Nixon ended up winning. It was like a nail-biting finish in a soccer game. He got just a little bit more of the votes than Hubert Humphrey. This election was special because it was the first time in a long time that Black Americans could vote more easily in all parts of the country, which was a very big deal for fairness.
