1964 Summer Olympics
Key Facts
Tokyo's Big Party!
Imagine a super-duper sports festival where athletes from all over the world come to show off their skills! That was the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. It was like the biggest playground ever, filled with running, jumping, swimming, and so much more. This was the very first time the Olympic Games were held in Asia, making it a super special event for everyone there.
Watching the Games Like Never Before!
Guess what? These Olympics were the first ever to be shown on TV all around the world, almost instantly! Before this, they had to send tapes on airplanes, which took a long time.
For the 1964 Games, they used a special satellite, like a super-fast messenger in space, to send the pictures. Some sports, like judo, were even shown in color for the first time, making everything look extra bright and exciting!
No South Africa Allowed?
Sometimes, rules are important to make sure everyone is treated fairly. For these Games, South Africa wasn't allowed to compete because of a rule called apartheid, which meant people were treated differently because of their skin color. The Olympic organizers wanted everyone to play together fairly, and South Africa didn't agree to send a team with athletes of all colors.
So, they had to sit out this special event.
When Did This Happen?
The 1964 Summer Olympics took place from October 10th to October 24th. They chose October so the weather wouldn't be too hot and sticky, and to avoid big storms called typhoons. It was a great time for the athletes to compete. The United States won the most gold medals, and the Soviet Union won the most medals overall. It was a fantastic display of sportsmanship and talent!
