Meet the Super-Long Ballot!

In 1964, something super strange happened in Illinois. Instead of voting for just a few people, voters had to pick from a HUGE list of candidates to be in charge of making rules for the state. The ballot was so long, it was like a giant scroll, measuring 33 inches! That's longer than a big pizza box. Everyone had to vote for all the people who would make the laws.

Why Was the Ballot So Long?

Illinois had a problem. The people in charge couldn't agree on how to draw the lines for voting areas. So, the rules said that if they couldn't figure it out, everyone in the whole state would vote for all the lawmakers at once!

It was like everyone in your class trying to pick the same team captain for every single game, all at the same time. This happened because they hadn't redrawn the voting areas for a very long time.

A Big Surprise for Everyone!

Guess what? All the candidates from one political party, the Democrats, won! It was a huge win, and they got more than two-thirds of the seats.

This happened because many people voted for their party's candidates all the way down the super-long ballot. It was like everyone cheering for the same color at a party. Even though people thought the ballot was confusing, most voters knew exactly who they wanted.

Making New Rules for the Future

This election was super important because it made people realize they needed to change how they picked lawmakers. The people elected in 1964 helped create new rules for Illinois, leading to a brand new state constitution later on. It was the only time in the whole United States that all the lawmakers for a state's lower house were chosen by everyone in the state voting at once!
