1944 United States presidential election

In 1944, the United States was choosing its leader, the President. It was like picking the captain of a giant team! The person who was already the President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, wanted to be President again. He had been President for a long time, even longer than you've been alive! He won against another person named Thomas E. Dewey. It was a big decision for everyone in America.

This election was super special because the country was in the middle of World War II. Think of it like a really big, serious game where countries were playing against each other. Because of the war, President Roosevelt was very popular. People felt safe with him in charge. It was like having your favorite superhero as the captain when you're playing a tough game.

President Roosevelt had a helper called the Vice President. In 1944, they picked a new helper named Harry Truman. The old helper, Henry Wallace, was not picked this time. People thought that since President Roosevelt was older, the Vice President might have to become President soon. So, they wanted someone they trusted a lot to be ready.

On election day, people across America went to vote. They marked their choices on paper, like you might color a picture. Even though President Roosevelt won, it was closer than before.
