Key Facts
America's Big Vote Day!
On November 3, 1936, grown-ups all over the United States went to vote for who they wanted to be their leader, the President. It was a really important day because the country was going through a tough time called the Great Depression. People were hoping for a leader who could help make things better. This election was like a super big test to see who people trusted the most to guide the country.
The Amazing Landslide!
One person, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, won SO many votes, it was like winning a game by a mile! He got more votes than almost anyone ever before. He won in almost every single state, except for two tiny ones called Maine and Vermont. It was a landslide victory, meaning he won by a HUGE amount, showing that most people wanted him to stay as President.
Who Were the Choices?
President Roosevelt was running again with his Vice President, John Nance Garner. They were like a team that people already knew. The other main choice was a man named Alf Landon. He thought some of President Roosevelt's ideas were good but also thought they could be done better. There was also a third person, William Lemke, but he didn't get as many votes.
Why Did Roosevelt Win So Big?
President Roosevelt had started programs to help people during the Great Depression, like Social Security, which helps people when they get older or can't work. These programs made a lot of people happy and feel safer. Even though the country was still facing challenges, many Americans felt that Roosevelt's plans were helping them get back on their feet.
That's why they voted for him again in such big numbers!
