Baseball's Biggest Showdown!

Get ready for the 1919 World Series! This was like the Super Bowl of baseball back then. Two amazing teams, the Chicago White Sox and the Cincinnati Reds, played against each other.

It was supposed to be a super exciting best-of-nine games, meaning a team had to win five games to be the champion. This was a special rule just for this series to make it even more popular and exciting for everyone watching!

Uh Oh, Something's Fishy!

But this World Series had a big secret. Some players on the Chicago White Sox were not playing their best on purpose! They secretly made a deal with people who bet money on games. These sneaky people wanted the White Sox to lose. It was like a secret plan to cheat and win money, not by playing fair baseball. This made lots of people very sad and angry.

Baseball Gets a New Boss!

Because of this cheating, baseball had to change. The owners of all the baseball teams decided they needed a super strict boss to make sure games were fair. They hired a man named Kenesaw Mountain Landis to be the first Commissioner of Baseball. His job was to make sure no one ever cheated like this again. He was very serious about keeping baseball honest and fun for everyone.

The Big Ban!

After the games, the truth came out. Eight players from the White Sox were banned from playing baseball forever! This means they could never play in an official game again. It was a very big punishment. Even though they were banned, some people now think they should be allowed in the Baseball Hall of Fame because they were great players.
