Where Did the Big Shake Happen?

This super shake happened way back on April 18, 1906, along the coast of California. It was so big that people felt it from way up north, near a town called Eureka, all the way down to a sunny farming area called the Salinas Valley. San Francisco is a famous city on the west coast of the United States, known for its hills and the big Golden Gate Bridge (though that wasn't built yet!).

When the City Wobbled!

In the early morning, when most people were still asleep, the ground started to rumble and shake. It was like being on a giant, wobbly trampoline! The shaking was so strong that it knocked buildings over and made the streets crack. This earthquake was one of the biggest and most dangerous ever in the United States.

Uh Oh, Fire!

After the shaking stopped, something else scary happened: fires started all over San Francisco! The broken gas pipes and fallen buildings made it easy for fires to spread. These fires burned for days and days, making the damage even worse. It was like a giant, uncontrollable campfire that destroyed most of the city.

Picking Up the Pieces

Sadly, over 3,000 people lost their lives because of the earthquake and the fires. More than 80% of San Francisco was destroyed, which is a huge amount of the city! It took a very long time for people to rebuild their homes and businesses. This event is remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in American history.
