Key Facts
Paris Throws a HUGE Party!
In 1900, the city of Paris, France, hosted a massive party called the Olympic Games! It was part of a giant World's Fair, like a super-duper big amusement park with amazing things to see. Athletes from many countries came to show off their skills in different sports. It was a bit like a big international playground where everyone got to play and compete.
Games, Games Everywhere!
There were so many different sports! Some were like the ones we know today, like swimming. But some were super weird and only happened once! Imagine racing in cars, flying in balloons, or even swimming underwater! And guess what? They even used live pigeons as targets in a shooting game – that's a WOW fact! Most winners didn't get gold medals, but cool cups or trophies instead.
Girl Power Arrives!
For the very first time ever, girls and women got to compete in the Olympics! How cool is that? A woman named Hélène de Pourtalès, who was a sailor, became the first-ever female Olympic champion. This was a super important step because it showed that everyone, no matter if they were a boy or a girl, could be an amazing athlete.
Did You Know?
Many athletes didn't even know they were in the Olympics! They just thought they were playing in special games at the World's Fair. Also, some games were played on Sundays, which made some American athletes unhappy because they didn't want to compete on their day of rest. France had the most athletes, like having the biggest team at school!
