Meet the Space Rock Giant!

Way out between Mars and Jupiter, there's a giant space rock called 10 Hygiea. It's so big, it's the fourth-largest asteroid we know of! If you could visit, it would look like a giant, bumpy potato.

It's not perfectly round, but it's pretty close. It has two big dents, like someone took a giant scoop out of it. This asteroid is so big and round, some scientists think it might even be a dwarf planet, like Pluto!

Who Found This Space Friend?

A smart astronomer named Annibale de Gasparis found 10 Hygiea a long, long time ago, in 1849. He was looking through his telescope in Italy and spotted it. He named it after Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health. Maybe because it's so big and important, it helps keep the asteroid belt healthy!

What's It Made Of?

10 Hygiea is covered in dark, dusty stuff that looks a bit like charcoal. Scientists think it's made of rocky materials mixed with water ice deep inside. It's a bit like a giant, frozen snowball mixed with dirt! This makes it very similar to another big space object called Ceres, which is also a dwarf planet.

A Big Space Family!

Guess what? 10 Hygiea is the parent of over 7,000 other asteroids! A long, long time ago, a super-huge crash might have happened on Hygiea. This crash broke it apart, but then it pulled itself back together into the big, round shape we see today. All those smaller asteroids are like its space family, all born from that giant crash!
